Halfway Survey Update

It’s been about a year since my research survey went live. The survey will remain up for another few months, closing in September 2011. The rate of responses has slowed, but a few continue to trickle in.

Towards the end of February I took a second snapshot of the survey results to see how things have changed. When I did my three month write-up, I had 337 total responses (251 fully complete and 86 partial). Since then, those numbers have jumped to 494 total (367 complete and 127 partial) of those 417 were complete enough to use for analysis.

Without further ado, here is some of that simple data with some graphs (no correlations or complex statistical analysis until the final results are published):

The average age continues to hold at 27 years old. Oldest respondent was 62 years old, youngest was 12.

The distribution for biological sex has changed a little from the initial results - now 62% female, 37% male, and 1% choosing not to answer, up from 53% female at last analysis.

84% of respondents were from the US, representing 46 different states, while 14% came from other countries, including Canada at 5%, England (2%), and Australia (2%).

Respondents were distributed across all education levels, with a majority in undergraduate education.

Most common fields for occupation were Student (23%, 95 responses), Customer Service/Retail (12%, 48 responses), and Computer related (11%, 45 responses).

59% of respondents were single, with 23% married and 12% living with partner.

Only 5% of survey respondents indicated a language other than English as their primary language.

Responses for self-identification of race were distributed as follows, with multiple answers allowed:

When asked what general fandoms they were interested/involved in, respondents answered as follows:

Respondents named 515 different specific fandoms that they considered themselves members of. Of those, the most popular responses included Star Trek, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Stargate, Firefly/Whedonverse, Supernatural, Battlestar Galactica, Lord of the Rings, Buffy, Pokemon, Glee, DC Comics, Final Fantasy, Naruto and Trueblood.

Respondents named 290 different specific fandoms that they were member of, but no longer participate in. Of these, the most popular responses also included Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, X-Files and Star Trek, but also included Stargate, Battlestar Galactica, Sailor Moon, Full Metal Alchemist, Naruto, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

85% of respondents said that they did attend fan conventions. Of those, convention preference was for Science Fiction conventions.

When asked what they most dislike about conventions, a majority of respondents said that other people's bad behavior (inappropriate touching/glomping, being unnecessarily loud or shouting, or generally being rude/creepy/lacking in social skills) was the biggest problem, followed by complaints of crowding/too many people.

Once again, thank you to anyone who took the time to complete the survey. I appreciate each and every response I get. Also, if there was a particular question you would like to know about that I didn't discuss above or would like to see more of the results, please let me know.

Follow up interview requests are being sent out in the next few weeks. Hopefully, I’ll be getting a few more survey responses from the last few conventions I’m attending for my research. The last convention should be New York Comic Con in October. The final results of the survey should be posted online and emailed to those who requested it by the end of October.
